The Major League Soccer season is reaching its climax. We are just a little over a month and a half away from the Playoffs.

Let’s take a look at the Power Rankings and standings and compare them against the odds at Bovada to win the cup.

MLS August Power Rankings & StandingsTop 5 in the Eastern Conference

Atlanta United currently leads in the east. Out of their 26 matches played, they’ve accrued 45 points on their 14 wins, 9 losses and 3 draws. Philadelphia also has 45 points, but are in second because they have one less win, albeit, one less loss. NYC FC is in third with 44 points. They have an opportunity to overtake Philly because they’ve accrued just one point less in two fewer games. This is where we start to see some separation. The NY Red Bulls have already played 27 games and have 41 points. DC United has played 28 and currently owns 39 points, riding just above .500 with 10 wins, 9 draws, and 9 losses.

  1. Atlanta United

  5. D.C. United
  6. New England Revolution
  7. Montreal Impact

Top 5 in the Western Conference

LAFC is dominating with 19 wins, 4 draws and just 3 losses. They’ve racked up an astounding 61 points in their 26 games played. They have assured themselves a top playoff berth with 19 points of separation between the No. 2 team in the west, the Minnesota United. The LA Galaxy are No. 3 with 41 points on 13 wins, 2 draws and 11 losses. Fourth is Real Salt Lake with 40 points taken from 12 wins, 4 draws, and 10 losses. The Seattle Sounders round out the Top 5 with 11 wins, 7 draws, and 8 losses, also with 40 points.

  1. LA FC
  2. Minnesota United
  3. LA Galaxy
  4. Real Salt Lake
  5. Seattle Sounders
  6. San Jose Earthquakes

Odds on 2019 MLS Winner

Los Angeles FC is the odds-on favourite to win the MLS Cup at just +150. Next in line is New York City at +700. Atlanta United comes in at +900 (9/1). But after these three teams, the odds start to get pretty long. Philadelphia and the Red Bulls are at +1600. The LA Galaxy, D.C. United, and New England all sit at +2000. Real Salt Lake and the Montreal Impact are both +4000, Whereas, Minnesota, Portland, San Jose, and Seattle have better odds at +2500.

This is interesting because the ladies and gentlemen in Las Vegas believe that A team that is currently in 7th place, like Portland, has a better probability than a 4th place team like Real Salt Lake.

Perhaps this is given to the fact that Seattle and Portland are perennial playoff teams with MLS Cup victories under their belts. Portland having won in 2015 and Seattle in 2016. Furthermore, we shouldn’t count out the winningest team in MLS history, the LA Galaxy.

What about the Power Rankings?

According to Sportsday, the Power Rankings are as followed:

  1. LA FC
  2. Atlanta United
  3. NYC FC
  4. Portland Timbers
  5. Minnesota United
  6. San Jose Earthquakes
  7. Real Salt Lake
  8. Philadelphia Union
  9. LA Galaxy
  10. Seattle Sounders

So the Power Rankings don’t fully agree with the current standings or odds, but the rankings are more about recent performance and potential.

One thing that the odds, rankings, and standings agree on is that Los Angeles Football Club and Atlanta United are the two best teams in the MLS.
